In 1893 Dr. Henri Moissan, a french chemist identified minute quantities of natural silicon carbide in the Diablo Canyonmeteorite found in a remote area of Arizona. In honor of Dr. Moissan, it was named Moissanite. On a Mohs scale of hardness the Moissanite tests at 9.25 whereas the Diamond tests at 10. Refractive brilliance of the Moissanite is 2.65-2.69 compared to 2.42 for a diamond. Dispersion and fire of the Moissanite is .104 compared to .044 to that of a Diamond and the Luster Index of the Moissanite is 20.4% compared to 17.2% for the Diamond. As you can see the created Moissanite outperforms the diamond in just about all categories. This is as close to a real diamond as you can get. These gemstones have almost no inclusions and are near colorless.
